Senior Slip and Fall Accidents

With the many changes coming upon us for our senior citizens, it will get to the point where more and more seniors and making every effort to stay in their own homes. Probably the biggest concern for both the seniors and their family members is their safety. Most of all... What if they have a fall?
Having a fall can lead to so many complications as we age. Statistics show that falls account for 87% of all fractures among people over the age of 65 and are the second leading cause of spinal cord and brain injury.
One place that many of these accidents happen is in the bathroom.
There are many tips for seniors that will lead to a safer bathroom environment.
- Use grab bars in the shower and bathtub area.
- Treat the bottom of the bathtub with a non slip bathtub product.
- Use a night light.
- Treat hard surface floor tile with a non slip floor treatment.
- Use a bathmat with a non slip rubber backing
- Be sure to turn the hot water heater no higher than 120 degrees
- Make sure there is nothing that can cause tripping.
- Provide a shower chair.
- Be sure to do an extra rinse when cleaning the floor, shower or bathtub.
- Use a cleaner that does not contain "soap". Soap is slippery.
- "Orange clean" will remove body oils from the surface to help avoid slips without a soapy buildup.
- Clean up water or spills immediately.
- Provide easy access for shampoos and soap products. Dispensers are available.
- Unplug all appliances and put them away.
- Use plastic cups or paper cups in the bathroom.
- Use light bulbs with higher wattage.
Half of all elderly adults (over the age of 65) hospitalized for hip fractures cannot return home or live independently after the fracture.
